Shoutout: Comparative Human Rights Event

The Research for Change Forum is pleased to announce its Human Rights themed event, Comparative Human Rights, on the 27th of November, 2018!

We extend our warmest welcomes to Matias Rodriguez Burr, Christopher Gray and Hakeem Tijani, postgraduate research students at the University of Bristol, to share their research and ideas.

Matias' thesis adopts a comparative law approach to discrimination in the US Supreme Court, the European Court of Human Rights and the Constitutional Court of South Africa, seeking to explore justifications for the recognition of discrimination on new, non-traditional or unlisted grounds. He also aims to identify normative principles and criterias for explaining why different non-discrimination law covers only certain groups of people, and who should be incorporated.

Hakeem’s study focus on the socio-economic rights of persons living with physical disabilities in Nigeria. Using comparative and critical thinking approaches, Hakeem aims to examine how the legal framework in place extends rights and protection to the daily reality of the disabled. He has adopted a hybrid of doctrinal and qualitative research methods in doing so.

Christopher's research mainly assesses the right to a fair trial and the rules relating to the admission of self-incriminating evidence. In particular, he focuses on the nature and character of the right to silence and its disparities in implementation, across England, Wales and The Gambia. By doing so, he seeks to expose a broader dissonance between the colonial notion of criminal procedure, and the administration of criminal justice in other forms in Gambia. His broader work also encompasses criminal justice, LGBTQIA+ rights, and critical legal and social theory.
